his first house by the Architect was designed and built on exposed solid granite ledge. The house was designed in a radial pattern of laminated beams to enable interior spaces to be free of dividing walls and to enjoy a panoramic view from northwest to east southeast. The central support for the roof and floors is a 12" diameter concrete column with #10 reinforcing steel bars grouted into holes drilled in the granite ledge, next to which are built granite fireplaces on two levels. The existence of open views to the north and east but with other homes close by on the south and west sides resulted in a wall of glass on the north and east with solid walls on the south of the living space and kitchen and on the west end of the bedroom wing. The slope of the ledge led to bedrooms being terraced down the slope on several levels.
The exposed concrete foundation is colored and randomly textured by the use of weathered wood in the forms, so as to give the feel of stone occurring in nature. The main level living space has a low ceiling over the fireplace for a cozy winter place while at the same time having a very high ceiling at the wall of glass on the exterior of the same room, to give light and air and openness in all seasons. A second living space/office on the upper level has a balcony open to the outer portion of the main living area and complete panoramic views through the upper part of the high glass wall. This home has been occupied by the same couple for over 25 years.
