BEFORE

his home was an unusual contemporary home in the form of a bridge, with open space at ground level under the center portion of the home. The home suffered from the lack of a prominently located entrance, the existing entrance being well hidden and having the feeling of a rear entrance. In addition, the owner wanted to add a two-car garage and new master bedroom suite above. The challenge was to accomplish the addition with a prominent new point of entry, while maintaining the existing contemporary character of the home. The solution was to form the new section in clean rectangular lines with a low-slope membrane roof, with the new point of entry being obviously indicated by a sheltered entry terrace and the destination from the entry point being articulated by a very prominent arrangement of trapezoidal windows in a form to suggest the climb to the second floor, where the living space was located.
