AFTER
n this home, the program called for a family room addition with master bedroom on the second floor. The existing home was in excellent condition, so it needed very little in the way of renovation, except the conversion from electric baseboard heat to zones off the hydro-air heating and cooling system desirable for the addition. The architect explored several schemes for an addition that fit the existing home, including one in which the gable roof of the addition was positioned at right angles to the existing residence, but the owners preferred the scheme in which the roof of the addition repeated the form of the existing home, with a large cricket roof connection for proper roof drainage. Among the special challenges on this site was to provide for proper drainage of groundwater from the sloping site above the house, where the pre-existing septic system was located, because one of the program requirements was to provide bulk storage in an expanded basement under the addition.
