his is a larger home so far only schematically designed for the owners on their very special steeply sloping site on the Connecticut River. The design has been developed to this point through several iterations as a result of intensive owner conferences, input and owner sketches. The great challenge here to is provide panoramic views from all parts of the house as desired by the owners, while still affording a measure of privacy. Another consideration is that the view is toward the southwest and west, thus giving a great boost to passive solar gain during cold months, but conversely yielding a cooling challenge for the warm months. The steeply sloping site is not ledge but high-quality gravel, which will require careful structural engineering of the foundation to assure stability. The solution may be foundation walls deeper than normal frost depth, pilings with reinforced concrete pile caps, or horizontal reinforced concrete beams tying back some distance into ground above the house.
